Cancer: The Fight For Life

I know, I have been there...

I can tell you from experience that chemo can hit differently after every treatment. Sometimes it's not so bad. Other times, like right now for me, it's miserable. Here are some things you can do to help your body recover more quickly from the poisoning:

Chemo isn’t a straight road—it’s a roller coaster. One round might leave you thinking, “Okay, I can handle this,” and the next knocks you flat. When it hits hard, like it is for me right now, here’s what I do to help my body bounce back from the poisoning as fast as possible.

First, hydrate like it’s your job. Water helps flush out toxins, but plain water isn’t enough. Add electrolytes—low-sugar options like LMNT or make your own with sea salt, lemon, and a dash of honey. Your cells need the right balance to function and recover.

Second, don’t skip protein. Even if you’re nauseated, sip on bone broth or a protein shake. Your body’s breaking down tissue, and without enough protein, you’ll just keep feeling weaker. Think of it like patching the holes in a sinking ship—essential repairs.

Third, move—just a little. A short walk or light stretching keeps blood moving and prevents that deep, achy fatigue from settling in. It’s not about burning calories; it’s about circulation and keeping your joints from locking up.

And finally, rest unapologetically. Your body’s in survival mode. Sleep when you can, even if it’s the middle of the day. Recovery isn’t about pushing through—it’s about listening to your body and letting it heal.

Remember ...
Chemo is a fight, and every round feels different. Some days you’re the warrior; other days, you’re just trying to breathe through it. Both are okay. Give yourself grace, take what your body needs, and remember—this hard season will pass. You’re not losing the fight; you’re surviving it.
